When should you feed Dried Mealworms to Wild Birds?
Birds adore Dried Mealworms as they provide a valuable and nutritious source of food. Mealworms are a favourite of garden birds all year round, though they are particularly popular in winter and summer when their energy requirements increase.
In summer wild birds are very active buildings nest & raising their young and in winter they need nutritious food to stay warm, Dried Mealworms provide the ideal food to give the birds at this time.
Many wild birds eat insects as part of their natural diet, so feeding Dried Mealworms mimics this behaviour.
Dried Mealworms can be fed as a treat or can be mixed in with other seed or suet pellets. Also if required you can soak the Dried Mealworms in water for 15 to 20 minutes to re-hydrate them, which will make them easier for the birds to digest. This is particularly useful for young birds and fledglings.
How should you feed Dried Mealworms to Wild Birds?
Dried Mealworms can be sprinkled straight onto the floor so birds can forage for them or be fed from a tray on a feeding station. Also Supa manufacture in the UK a feeder specifically for Dried Mealworms.

We have quite a lot of small birds in the garden. These meal worms get gobbled up quickly when we put them out. Since using them, we’ve also had some jays and jackdaws.

Our sparrows love mealworms! We don’t like to keep live mealworms and the birds can’t seem to carry these away because they shatter with being dried. So I tried to reconstitute them in water. I put some in a heat resistant food safe container the night BEFORE I want some, pour over boiling water from kettle, cover loosely and leave overnight, then they’re all soft again, then I drain water off and feed in a mesh dish. Don’t use cold water, I’ve tried, doesn’t work, they stay a bit hard still. The sparrows honestly adore them, can’t get enough. This is especially good when they are nesting for the babies. The sparrows whizz them up and down their mouth like a mouth organ! So funny. It’s a bit of faffing about for me, but worth it because of how much the sparrows love them done this way. I’ve only done this at nesting time up to now, but I bet they’d love them in the Winter months especially too.

The local starlings eat this stuff like they have never been fed. The wood pidgeons and black birds pick up the scraps. There is a robin that fights over it as well. I don’t know if its good meals worms they were eating. Or it was the only place they could get some.
